There are several different options out there when it comes to cell phone chargers. That’s why it’s important to know what your options are, and the differences between them. Let’s take a look at a few of your choices.
Standard Battery Chargers
This is the regular charger that comes with most cell phones. One end plugs into the wall, and the other plugs into the phone. That’s it. Once plugged in, the charger will start drawing an electrical current and send it straight to your phone. It works on the principle of step down transformers. Simple chargers don’t have any smart monitoring system so they will continue to feed current into battery until unplugged. Luckily batteries have a built in mechanism to stop drawing power once it’s full. The better ones also have built-in stabilizers to remove any unwanted voltage peaks. Just make sure that you get a charger that’s compatible with your phone.
Universal Serial Bus (USB) Chargers
These chargers operate just like simple wall chargers. The only difference between them is the method of drawing power. Wall charges draw the current from the power outlet while USB chargers draw from computers.
USB ports have three versions; USB 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0. Most phones support USB 2.0 as it is compatible with all computer designs. Also keep in mind that your computer doesn’t need to be on in order to charge your phone.
Car Chargers
A portable car charger is an innovative solution that allows you to charge your phone while driving. All you have to do is plug your car charger into the cigarette/electrical outlet and that’s it.
Again, you need to figure out what type of charger your phone supports. For example, it could be a lightning connector (used with newer iPhones), or a USB connector (used with most other phones).
Desktop Charging Docks
A desktop charger is just a dock that you simply put your phone into. The main advantage to this type of charger is that you’ll never have to worry about cord-fray again. It also provides a nice little stand for you display your phone in all its glory.
While most of the desktop chargers have single slots, some advanced designs have multiple. Multiple slot desktop chargers allow you to charge more than one phone at a time, making them very family friendly. The only drawback to desktop chargers is their rigid design, which makes phone use difficult while charging.
Wireless Chargers
Welcome to the future of mobile charging. If you hate dealing with cords, fear not, soon they’ll be obsolete. Wireless chargers are very simple and easy to use. Simply set your phone down on the wireless charging pad and you’re done! No cords, no plugging, no hassle.
This is still a fairly new concept to hit the market so not every phone can take advantage of this yet. In order to use wireless charging, your phone needs to be Qi compatible. It can come this way or you can buy a chip and insert it into select phones. Once this all really picks up and Apple jumps on board, you can expect to see this become the new standard in charging.
